 1. FSCAM_CU135 - FAQ

1.1 What is FSCAM_CU135?

FSCAM_CU135 is a 13.0 MP, color, UVC compliant, USB 3.1 Gen 1 SuperSpeed camera with the S-mount (also known as M12 board lens) lens holder. It is a two-board solution containing the camera sensor module board with 1/3.2" AR1335 CMOS - Electronic Rolling Shutter image sensor from onsemi® along with Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 1 connector. FSCAM_CU135 is the first series of cameras from e-con Systems, with on demand buffer for storing and retrieving frames when required. It can store the images from camera when instructed and send to host on request. It has 2 Gb DDR3 SDRAM to store and access frames at very high speeds without affecting the camera streaming.

1.2 What is the memory capacity of FSCAM_CU135?

FSCAM_CU135 can store maximum of five 13 MP uncompressed UYVY frames. Also, maximum still frame can be stored depending on the resolution as listed in below table.
Image Format Resolution Maximum No. of Still Frames can store
Uncompressed UYVY/Compressed MJPG VGA (640 x 480 10

1.4 Can I store burst images into the camera at once?

The images will be stored into camera on request. For one request, one image will be stored. You can continuously instruct the camera to store continuous images.

1.5 Can I retrieve all the stored images at once?

For retrieving all images at once, refer the SDK source and modify the implementation. Or contact sales@e-consystems.com for support.

1.6 What is the order of still images stored in the camera?

The still images stored in the camera will be ordered as listed in below table.

1.7 Is there any order to retrieve the still images?

By default, there is no order to retrieve the frame. The stored still images can be retrieved in any order using its corresponding frame index.

1.8 How much time does the stored images retained in the camera?

The stored still images will be retained in the camera until it is powered ON or the still resolution and formats are changed.

1.9 What are the streaming modes available in FSCAM_CU135?

FSCAM_CU135 supports four stream modes as follows:
  • Free - Run Mode
  • Master Mode - (On demand)
  • Software Trigger Mode
  • Hardware trigger Mode

1.10 What is the difference between Free-Run and Master mode?

Both modes are used for continuous streaming in any preview application. Free-run mode is a simple mode of operation for the camera for video streaming without any external trigger capability.

In master mode, the frames are transferred from camera to host application on request to avoid buffer overflow issues in DirectShow or V4L2 based application. The host application continuously instructs the camera to get the frame for live streaming.

1.11 What is the difference between Software and Hardware trigger mode?

Both software and hardware trigger modes are used for triggering frames from the camera through software command or hardware trigger pulse respectively.

In software trigger mode, if trigger sent to multiple cameras at once, it will ensure a frame sync level of synchronization at the host application if frames are properly utilized with available time stamps. In hardware trigger mode, it will ensure a line sync level of synchronization.

1.12 What sort of support does e-con Systems provides along with the camera?

We offere-con Systems provides the basic support for all the customers who have purchased the camera. We provideThe hardware/software/firmware customization of the kit will be provided by e-con Systems based on your requirements. We e-con Systems can also manufacture and supply the customized cameras.

 2. Reference Design - SW

2.1 Can I get access to ISP registers?

No. The option is not available by default but will be provided on case to case basis with firmware customization.

2.2 Can I get access to image sensor registers?

No. The sensor registers are directly controlled by the ISP.

2.3 The frame rate is not consistent in UYVY format. Can I fix it?

Yes, the camera is designed to allow exposure till 66.66 ms in auto exposure mode and hence the frame rates can drop till 15 fps. You can either set the maximum exposure limit using exposure compensation (in Extension Settings menu) or choose manual exposure to get desired frame rates.

2.4 The frame rate is not consistent in MJPEG format. Can I fix it?

Yes, but the frame rate may still get reduced due to the scene details or the frame size which in turn affects the rendering capability from PC to PC. Performance improvement can be seen based on graphic card or display adapter capability. To increase the frame rates, you can either decrease Q-Factor or increase De-Noise control value in Extension Settings menu since both decreases the frame size.

2.5 What are the supported OSes?

The supported OSes are Windows 8.1 and 10, and Linux Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04.

2.6 What is the maximum resolution that can be captured? What is the frame rate at this resolution?

4208 x 3120 (13 MP) is the maximum resolution supported from the camera. The frame rates supported are 9 fps in UYVY and 20 fps in MJPEG.

2.7 How to enable "face and smile detection" in FSCAM_CU135 camera? What are the help documents I need to refer for the same?

Please refer to: FSCAM_CU135_Face_and_Smile_Detection_Application_Note.pdf to know more about face and smile detection in FSCAM_CU135 camera.

2.8 Does the camera offer the flexibility to program the exposure time?

Yes. The Exposure time can be set either to auto or can be set manual.

2.9 What are the sample applications provided along with the design kit?

e-CAM View for Windows and QtCAM (with source) for Linux are the sample applications provided. Also, an SDK application in Windows is provided with source code for multi camera implementation.

2.10 In SDK, can the exposure and brightness of the camera altered in run time?

Yes, these controls are part of the SDK application and QtCAM source.

2.11 Can I control frame rate on the FSCAM_CU135 camera?

Yes, there is an option to control the frame rate.

  3. Reference Design - HW

3.1 What is the lens used in this camera?

The lens used in the camera is S-mount (M12) with a focal length of 4.3 mm and a diagonal FOV of 67°.

3.2 What is the minimum distance that the lens could focus?

The minimum working distance (distance between the camera and the object) for the camera is 10 cm.

3.3 I need reliable operation when I connect multiple cameras to same host or when I connect to an embedded board. Do I have options?

Yes. You can switch to master mode to get the reliable streaming in multi cameras. Since, the frames are transferred to host application on request in master mode, the reliable operation is ensured by overcoming the bandwidth related issues such as buffer overflow issues in DirectShow or V4L2 based application.

3.4 How to use external hardware trigger option in FSCAM_CU135?

Please refer to: FSCAM_CU135_Hardware_Trigger_Mode_Application_Note.pdf to know about how to use external trigger option in FSCAM_CU135.

3.5 The kit is getting very hot. Is it suitable for usage?

Yes, but the camera module needs an external heat sink to dissipate the heat for prolonged usage.

3.6 I would like to use a different lens. What is the NRE charge?

If your application requires fixed focus custom lens, contact sales@e-consystems.com. Non-recurring engineering (NRE) refers to the one-time cost to research, design, develop and test a new product or product enhancement.

3.7 Is the FSCAM_CU135 camera available with autofocus support?

Currently it is supported only for M12 lens based manual focus lenses. Auto focus support can be provided based on hardware customization efforts.

3.8 Why do I need USB Y-cable? Why can't I use normal USB cable?

FSCAM_CU135 in USB 2.0 consumes more than 500mA that a single port can supply. In order to get reliable power supply in USB 2.0, Y- cable is used.

3.9 Can I change the lens mount from S-mount to C-mount?

This is not supported by default in FSCAM_CU135. But e-con Systems can deliver it as a hardware customization effort.
