Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is STURDeCAM57?

+

STURDeCAM57 is a 5-megapixel global shutter RGB-IR GMSL2 camera based on an automotive-grade image sensor. It delivers simultaneous dual-stream RGB and infrared (IR) imaging from a single camera, producing motion-blur-free images with superior low-light performance during the day and night.

2. What IR illumination wavelength does STURDeCAM57 support?

+

STURDeCAM57 supports IR illumination in the 850 nm to 940 nm range by OMNIVISION’s Nyxel® technology for high NIR sensitivity. The camera features a default of four 940 nm IR LEDs—making it ideal for demanding low-light and nighttime vision applications. IR LEDs, such as 850nm, can also be customized to meet your specific needs. For customizations, please contact camerasolutions@e-consystems.com.

3. How does STURDeCAM57 produce simultaneous RGB and IR image data?

+

The lens of STURDeCAM57 is equipped with a dual-bandpass filter that allows both visible and IR light to pass through. This light is captured by the OX05B1S sensor, which has an RGB-IR Bayer filter array, in which a proportion of pixels carry an IR-pass filter in place of the standard red, green, or blue color filters.

The onboard ISP processes the raw data and separates it into two output streams:

  • RGB Stream: A full-color image reconstructed from the R, G, and B pixels in the array.
  • IR Stream: A grayscale near-infrared image derived from the IR-filtered pixels. Both streams are produced simultaneously from a single sensor pass at two different exposures.

4. How does RGB-IR with enhanced dynamic range help in real-world use?

+

The RGB-IR imaging with enhanced dynamic range enables STURDeCAM57 to preserve both color and infrared details in varying lighting conditions, improving scene understanding for applications such as driver monitoring systems (DMS), occupant monitoring systems (OMS), industrial automation, and more.

5. What is stream health monitoring and recovery in STURDeCAM57?

+

STURDeCAM57 includes a built-in stream health-monitoring and recovery mechanism that continuously tracks the status of the sensor, ISP, and GMSL link, ensuring consistent, uninterrupted camera performance.

6. Does the IR LED in STURDeCAM57 meet eye safety requirements?

+

Yes, the IR illumination in STURDeCAM57 is designed to comply with applicable eye-safety standards.

7. Does STURDeCAM57 have a built-in ISP (Image Signal Processor)?

+

Yes. STURDeCAM57 incorporates a built-in ISP, fine-tuned by e-con Systems, that performs the following image-processing functions within the camera:

  • RGB & IR separation
  • Demosaicing
  • Defect pixel correction
  • Auto white balance and auto exposure
  • Colour correction
  • Denoising

By performing these functions on-camera, STURDeCAM57 reduces the computational burden on the host processor, freeing host resources for higher-level inference, application logic, and multi-camera pipeline management.

8. Which platforms other than NVIDIA® Jetson AGX Orin are supported by STURDeCAM57?

+

In addition to the NVIDIA® Jetson™ AGX Orin™, STURDeCAM57 is also supported on:

  • NVIDIA® Jetson Orin™ NX: Requires an appropriate carrier board with GMSL2 deserializer support.
  • NVIDIA® Jetson Orin™ Nano™: Requires an appropriate carrier board with GMSL2 deserializer support.
  • e-con Systems AI Compute Box - Darsi™ PRO

9. What IP rating does STURDeCAM57 carry?

+

STURDeCAM57 features an IP67-rated enclosure, ensuring protection against dust and water ingress.

10. What are the available cable length options for STURDeCAM57?

+

The off-the-shelf STURDeCAM57 comes with a 3-meter GMSL2 cable. The cable length can be customized up to 15 meters based on your application requirements. For a custom cable specification (different length, connector type, or IP69K-rated cable), please contact camerasolutions@e-consystems.com.

11. Is the GMSL2 coaxial cable IP67 certified? Can I use an alternate GMSL2 coaxial cable?

+

Yes, the standard GMSL2 coaxial cable supplied with STURDeCAM57 is IP67 certified — it is shielded and rated for dust-proof and waterproof operation.

Regarding alternate cables: Any FAKRA-connector, GMSL2-compatible, 50Ω shielded coaxial cable of equivalent impedance and shielding class is technically compatible.

12. Can I connect STURDeCAM57 to a PC or a laptop via USB?

+

Yes, STURDeCAM57 can be connected directly to a PC or laptop using a GMSL-to-USB converter for evaluation.

13. What lens options are available for STURDeCAM57?

+

STURDeCAM57 comes with a standard 120° wide-field-of-view (FOV) M12 lens. This lens is suitable for in-cabin monitoring, covering both driver and passenger areas within a single frame. Custom lens options—including different FOVs and focal lengths are available upon request. For customization, please contact camerasolutions@e-consystems.com.
