What is Global Shutter?

When a camera is on global shutter mode, the image sensor allows the sensor's pixels to start exposing and stop exposing simultaneously for the programmed exposure period. At the end of the exposure time, the pixel data readout begins - proceeding row by row until all pixel data has been read. Global shutter sensors are popularly used in applications that need to capture high-speed moving objects.

Global Shutter vs. Rolling Shutter

When on rolling shutter mode, artifacts are caused since every row in a frame is exposed at different times. The exposure of consecutive rows starts sequentially - resulting in deformations (or rolling shutter artifacts) in the output image while capturing moving objects. Conversely, the global shutter mode uses a mechanism that produces non-distorted images without wobble or skewing.

Global Shutter vs Rolling Shutter

What Is Rolling Shutter Artifact & How Global Shutter Can Help?

As mentioned above, rolling shutter artifact occurs in the output image when the object moves too fast within the exposure time, and its position varies between the start and end of exposure times. The higher the exposure time or speed of the target object, the higher the artifacts. A global shutter camera can capture images in a single moment of time. There's no need for rolling or scanning, as with the rolling shutter. Hence, it can eliminate skewing and distortions in the captured images. It is used in applications like autonomous mobile robots, smart traffic management systems, warehouse & factory automation, etc.
