Embedded software is a highly specialized area of software development and closely linked with system programming. Embedded systems refers to ‘on-microprocessor’ programming written using machine level instruction sets such as Assembly, Verilog, VHDL etc. Software for embedded systems needs to be able to work with very limited resources (memory, power) and often has to work in a real-time environment. Embedded systems employ a combination of hardware and software (a “computational engine”) to perform a specific function. It is typically part of a larger system that may not necessarily be a ‘computer’ and works in a reactive and time-constrained environment. |
